For legendary New Edition singer Ronnie DeVoe and his wife, singer and former reality TV personality and Blaque artist Shamari DeVoe, celebrating two decades of marriage was worth crossing an ocean for. The couple recently marked their 20th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows on African soil, with their twin sons, Ronald III and Roman Elijah, standing by their sides.
The two took to Instagram to share the emotional milestone with fans, reflecting on the journey that brought them to such a moment.
“20 years later we said I do again… This time in the Motherland. Through every challenge, God kept us. Celebrating our love while finally making it back ‘home’ made this moment even more powerful. Legacy. Love. Forever,” they wrote.
The colorful ceremony, which took place in Ghana, was a declaration of faith, family, and elucidated their connection to their ancestral roots.
“Marriage isn’t about perfection… it’s about faith, forgiveness, and choosing each other again and again. God has been the foundation of it all. The best is still ahead,” a reel of their experience read.
What makes this moment even more extraordinary is the context surrounding it. Just days before the ceremony, on March 9, Ronnie and Shamari were among approximately 150 people of African descent who were officially granted Ghanaian citizenship in a ceremony held at the Accra International Conference Centre. As part of a national initiative welcoming the diaspora back to the Continent, the couple took the Oath of Allegiance alongside fellow honorees, including singer and pastor Montell Jordan.
The DeVoes have long been intentional about being a traveling family and exposing their sons to the world. Last July, they traveled to Beijing, where they explored China’s imperial history.
“We are Black excellence draped in Qing Dynasty silk, proving that wherever we go, our lineage walks with us. A moment for our sons to see themselves as royalty and a reminder that our roots run deeper than borders,” the singer captioned the post.
The artists married on March 10, 2006, and gave birth to their twins in 2017. Cheers to many more years of love, family, and deep roots!
For Ronnie and Shamari DeVoe, love isn’t just something they fell into two decades ago. It’s something they keep actively building, brick by brick, continent by continent, with intention and God at the center.
